In this video I am showing and explaining how I usually would go about learning new stuff on the guitar. How I figure something out by ear, what things to choose when learning, and the process I'm using.

I decided to take on the same challenge. I gave myself one full hour, and I happily report I can play the E-minor chord.

Sleep! Sleep is a big part of this. You can practice and practice and practice and get _almost_ there but not quite. But I find after sleeping, sometimes things just "click" the next day, as if it's been committed to your muscle memory.

It is actually very comforting to know that even a guitar player of your magnitude has to put in these kinds of effort and hours to get it, yes having talent and a natural predisposition helps, but you still got to put in the work!

That is not a lick, it's a full french kiss.

You sound like the guy that says, “two hours later, ” on spongebob.

I would really love to see your guitar progress as a 1 million special. You could include things like how you have started, what your inspiration was, how much you practiced every day and which songs you learned. Also what kind of guitar exercises you did. I think that would really help a lot of people (me included) to see what the next step in guitar playing is for everybody.

There are no shortcuts to getting better except "put in the hours".
For the technical bits for beginners: Get software that lets you easily loop parts, isolate parts, and speed up or slow down parts or entire songs. I myself use Audacity for this. And then you can easily repeat bits to figure out the notes. Write those notes down. Pen & paper works but for software I recommend Guitar Pro (as also shown in this video).
Then you can either play along directly from Guitar Pro OR load up the song in Audacity. Lower the tempo and practice until it's comfortable. Then up the tempo and practice until it's comfortable, repeat until required speed is reached.
I've used this method for years. With my old band we wrote songs (midi) that we literally were unable to play and simply practiced until we could. Some songs took literal months before we got to a level where we could record them on clicktrack. It's frustrating. It's (sometimes literal) blood, sweat, and tears. But that moment you nail that song for the very first time... That's the high that keeps me coming back for more.

Just practice. A lot. Everyday. There’s no cutting corners. If there was, there’d be a lot more great players

It’s cool watching someone who is amazing at guitar, struggle like a beginner with a lick. Shows me that there is hope

You are the most delightful and calmest guitar teacher on Youtube. It's always a pleasure to listen to your videos :)

This is so underrated. So many guitarists rely on tabs.

Music is a language. You don't learn a language by sitting down and learning the rules of grammar, you learn to speak by being immersed, copying what you hear and understanding the context in which you heard it, and learning to apply it in different contexts.

Maan seeing this makes me so relieved . Cuz i m exactly like this . And seeing all these other guitarists playing perfectly always made me feel talentless . I didnt know the backstage to their success was just like mine . Thanks paul . <3

Its comforting seeing that even great guitarists like Paul still need to put in the work to see results. That should be everyone's takeaway.

"If you hear something you want to play, figure it out." Thank you for this advice, I am now a #1 guitarist in the world, when asked by reporters the secret to my success I said, "Paul told me to figure it out, so I did." Stunned faces, every time.

I love watching musicians push themselves. It shows that, even the people the we look up to in our musical lives struggle with certain things just like we do ourselves.

Thank you! You are one of the rare kinds who is willing to be vulnerable by showing the actual process of getting through a song learning process and isn't just about showcasing perfection which doesn't exist.
