It was over in the late 80s as far as I'm concerned. I disconnected from all TV over 20 years ago I replaced it with dog, cat, kayaking, traveling, hiking and I am building a canoe now. Life is still good I make it that way.

They had to run cable from town to town. You would ask your friends from out of state. "Do you guys have cable yet?" If not, they did not have MTV yet.
