What about testing the M9 with the google camera app? If software is the issue, we will know soon and it would not be such a bad point anymore, if it would be improved that is.

The only point were the M9 wins is that you can make more zoom without losing detail, but the photo itself without zooming, vídeo and audio recording the M8 its better.
I really miss UltraPixel, I wanted an 8 or 12 UltraPixel with OIS and it will be perfect.

I currently own an HTC M7 and love it but instead of purchasing the M9 I went for the Z3 and I'm happy with my decision. My Z3 would run circles around both of those cameras! Great comparison though. Thank you!

The 'Lock focus during recording' is enabled by default. Just untick it in camera options.

You forgot to mention that the M8 doesn't use megapixels but it has Ultrapixel technology.
Much bigger dots which capture more light and color. Which is the reason for the low resolution.
And that's also why the M8 does so good in low-light conditions.
Almost catches more light than my own eyes... not quite, but I was amazed how good it is at sucking-in light in almost complete darkness.
I put the photo cam to Manual settings, and then adjusted the shutter speed to 4 SECONDS!!! it takes a 4 second photograph!! So don't move the phone.
And I set the ISO to 800. I had my TV turned on, which was the only light source. I took a photograph of the stuff laying around in the room corner.

Just brighter than my eye can see. literally. amazing stuff!!!

You nailed it! The camera on the M9 wasn't good. Is this before or after the OTA? I will have to wait and see if the M10 is worth looking at. The M9 should really be called the M8 Minus...

I've had my HTC One M8 for a year now. I gotta tell u picture quality can better. I actually use manual mode to get the perfect picture. I tinkered with it enough to take some pretty good looking pictures. I have to agree with you on the 1080p HD video recording though.

Great indepth Camera comparison and it appears all the day Htc one M9 is better but when sun turns down it's bad and worse than M8
I wish if they can fix many of this in the next software update !

Do you think an update would fix the camera/video issues with the M9? I waited a whole year for this model and they got everything right except the camera. I like that they added the stronger lens cover so its more scratch proof. But its disappointing to see that video is so shaky and it seems choppy too versus the M8.
