It makes no sense why people will pay a lot of money to get fake VHS effects when you could just buy some VHS tapes and keep making copies of copies and so on until they get the visual/audio result they want.

I love that it's done in reverse instead of going from High to Low quality. It's like seeing an evolution rather than a degradation.

I love the genuine creepiness added with the generation loss.

That moment when your music taste is so deranged that you genuinely enjoy the cries of a perishing VHS tape

The fact that this song is still enjoyable at 13th gen VHS quality RIP Pete Burns

for those wondering what causes this, generation loss usually occurs when there’s noise or bandwidth issues between the source and destination. it starts off slow but eventually begins to stack. noise could be from amplifiers or simply caused by poor quality cables. this also happens after many conversions between analog format and digital. the loud sounds is caused by the unclear data that the vcr uses to calculate volume and so it guesses (varies between systems). another common audio issue is that the audio quality simply degrades after copying (most likely cause). tl;dr bad quality caused by copying the tape

13: Periods of the video are missing entirely
12: Picture is now a little more stable, audio is also a little more stable
11: Picture is almost stable, not much of a audio improvement
10: Audio is now slightly less distorted, picture didn't improve much at all
9: Not much of a difference here other than the audio being slightly clearer
8: Audio is now quieter and less distorted and the picture is ever so slightly better
7: Audio might be slightly louder but the picture has gotten sharper
6: Color is now existant, but only in small parts. Picture is a little sharper and the audio is still pretty distorted
5: Color is nearly full, picture is now a decent amount sharper and the audio is still distorted but is sounding better
4: Audio is now much less distorted, picture is nearly the same if not a bit more stable and colors are now full
3: Distortion is nearly gone, picture is sharper
2: Distortion is gone, picture is nearly original quality
1 (Original): Picture is full, audio is full and low frequencies are more telligible

I could probably tolerate up to 4th generation loss, anything after that the distortion and damage would detract too much from the recording. Reminds me of when I used to trade VHS tapes of rare shows with friends - some of the ones I received are definitely at least 3rd generation!

At the 11th generation, Pete kinda looks like the Globglogabgalab.

All 13 generations in a nutshell:

Gen 13: Picture only visible in certain parts and sound has a bit of static to the point where it's a bit hard to understand

Gen 12: Most of the picture returned yet it's still struggling
(Also the part where I found out what was playing)

Gen 11: Picture doesn't struggle as much

Gen 10: Picture now has less static

Gen 9: Static is hardly there anymore

Gen 8: The screen cuts to green near the end signaling the near return of the color

Gen 7: Picture is brighter and more clear

Gen 6: You start seeing minor flashes of color meaning that the color is struggling to return

Gen 5: Color returns to stay seconds into the clip

Gen 4: Color mostly restored being colorless at the top

Gen 3: Sound isn't as bass boosted anymore

Gen 2: Static completely gone
and sound is mono

Gen 1: With the sound stereo again the clip was successfully restored

I've never faced this kind of issue in the vhs era. There were sometimes not as clean as should be recordings. Maybe it depends on the vcr's quality, the tape's quality and the transferring type. Broken cable may could produce some like this. According to this video I never met any worse than gen 3 videos. :)
And I never thought this music has a clip. Thanks! :)

0:01 Gen 13: The video is super unstable, audio can barely be heard, and absolutely no color. Plus chunks of the video are missing entirely.

0:26 Gen 12: Chunks are back, but the video is still unstable, and audio is more clear.

0:50 Gen 11: Audio is clearer and video is slightly unstable. Audio is still kinda unclear though.

1:14 Gen 10: Video is completely stable and audio is getting better.

1:39 Gen 9: Audio getting better, but still very unclear.

2:04 Gen 8: Keep going, audio!

2:28 Gen 7: Cmon, audio. Doing great 👍.

2:53 Gen 6: Color exists now and the audio is still going.

3:18 Gen 5: Color is coming but is bleeding a lot and a colorless bar at the top.

3:43 Gen 4: Audio is getting drastically cleaner from gen 13. Grey bar still exists but is smaller.

4:07 Gen 3: We can see the grey bar getting smaller, but the color still bleeds a bit.

4:31 Gen 2: Color barely bleeds now. Audio is almost perfect. Grey bar barely exists.

4:56 Gen 1: Color no longer bleeds. Audio is perfect. Grey bar no longer exists.

Now that I'm just listening to this in September of 2017, this video was literally nostalgia

0:08 Gen 13: The audio is still there (although in reeally bad quality) and the vdeo plays at around 50p (0.1K, if you call it.), sometimes stuttering and going black. 0:27 Gen 12: There is no real difference, exept there being no more stutters, and the image constantly playing. 0:50 Gen 11: No difference {O_0} 1:16 Gen 10: No difference {O_0} 1:39 Gen 9: No difference, exept the audio starting to clear up a bit. 2:04 Gen 8: Audio begins to clear up, not so bass boosted anymore, and also at the end, a big GSOD. (green screen of death). Gen 7: 2:29 Audio is beginning to sound "normal", and hooray. The picture has begun getting better, no GSOD at the end ;) Gen 6: 2:53 The picture at the end gains colour, a thing we have been awaiting. The audio is beginning to sound you know, actually good. Gen 5: 3:18 The image gained all its original colour, and the audio sounds good again. Gen 4: 3:43 Once again, the image quality gets better :p
Gen 3 4:08 : The image is now playing at a stable 480p (1K, to put it that way.), although the colours are a bit too vibrant.
Gen 2: 4:30 No difference {O_0}
Gen 1 4:55 : Literally, the video with 0 generation loss. Finally i can listen to my music in peace.

I was confused for a moment because it was reverse degeneration but it's really good!
