best guess, Make sure you have the brush tool selected, Double check your opacity settings. if you have checked those and it's still doing it. Sometimes Photoshop just acts retarted. try saving and restart photoshop. see if that fixes it. depending how much ram you have and how large the picture your working on. photoshop runs low on ram and start acting weird. usually restarting fixes it.. Hope that helps. doesn't sound like you did anything wrong, maybe you just over looked or it acting up..

Gotta make sure the layer "mask" is selected. Then black will act like a reverseable eraser.

I tried to use this function, but I don't know why in thumbnail it shows i am deleting something, while the overall big image shows nothing... this make me cannot realize which part i am selecting.... do you know why? Thanks!

Can you give me an example as to what your trying to achieve. You can apply a mask to an empty layer easy. Create new layer > add mask to it. But Frankly, I can see only a small amount of reasons to even do this. And in all of those scenarios I can think of better ways. A layer mask At it's core is just a precision way of controlling transparency on each individual layer. Of course there are way to have the layer mask effect more than one layer by linking them....

Hi. For some reason, when I select white to the foreground in order to bring back what I've painted away with black, it doesn't work. If I select the painted away area with the selection tool and then fill it with the white foreground color it reappears. Any suggestions on the painting with white? Thanks.
