Yes, Russian is pretty difficult to learn. I remember once when a friend of mine took one look at a Russian text and said, "I guess the toughest part is learning the alphabet." I assured him that was the easiest part. He didn't run screaming from the room, but he did look at me like I was trying to climb Mount Everest. It's true there are three genders, six cases, and noun endings are different than adjective endings, and most verbs are irregular, but I didn't find that so bad. The tough part was Aspect. Russian verbs come in pairs, so when you get to the Perfective Aspect, you realize there are twice as many verbs to learn. Naturally, there are lots of different ways to form this aspect. It has something to do with an action either being over and done with, or ongoing for some unspecified length of time. Since I only spoke Russian in classrooms (never out in the wild) I never really got the hang of it. Still. . . it's a cool language, and I recommend it to anyone who wants to spend the next five, six, or seven years to get to B1. And take care of that eye. (I don't know how to say that in Russian.)

Great video! Having only learned Germanic and Romance languages in the past I feel like Russian could be a great new challenge! :D

For me Russian was extremely easy to learn, but I'm Polish. ;) The hardest part (but not too hard ;)) is the pronunciation which is much "softer" than Polish.

Re. vocabulary, true there are cognates with English, but they are definitely the exception rather than the rule. For me getting so many new words to stick in my memory is a big challenge.

*The Russian language is an artificial language, created after 1500. Before 1500 it did not exist. In Kyivan Rus, Kingdom of Rus, Lithuania-Rus state there was one official language - Old Ukrainian, which is East Slavic. So the russian language did not come from the East Slavic language, because it is an artificial. Only Ukrainian and Belarusian languages came from East Slavic. The modern Russia is an Ugro-finnic country. It is a true fact, based on true historical documents, and this fact is not argued.*
