A geographic coordinate system defines two-dimensional coordinates system based on imaginary lines of latitude and longitude covers the entire planet. Locations of different places and regions are measured based on both X and Y coordinates within the grid. The distance between Lines vary because the earth is round, This network of intersecting lines is called a graticule.

Latitudes
Latitude are imaginary lines which run east to west. They are also called parallels because they are not only parallel to the equator and but to one another also. The equator which is at 0 degree, runs in a circle around the center of the Earth, divides the planet into north and south hemispheres. Lines of latitude start from 0 degrees at the equator and end a 90 degrees at the North and South Poles. There are total 180 degrees of latitude.  The distance between each degree of latitude is about 69 miles (110 kilometers).
Though latitudes are parallel so mostly the distance between each degree remains constant. However, the Earth`s shape is slightly elliptical that produces a little variation between the degrees as we proceed further to poles from the equator.
Each degree of latitude is approximately 69 miles (111 kilometers) apart from each other .
At the equator, the distance is 68.703 miles (110.567 kilometers).
while Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn (23.5 degrees north and south), the distance slightly varies, it is 68.94 miles (110.948 kilometers).
And at each poles, the distance is 69.407 miles (111.699 kilometers).

Longitudes
Longitudes run north-south and mark the location of any place east-west. Longitudes are known as meridians.  These lines run from pole to pole, crossing the equator at right angles. There are 360 degrees of longitude which divide the world in Eastern Hemisphere and the Western Hemisphere (-180 degrees of longitude west and 180 degrees of longitude east).
The Prime Meridian  line which passes through the Greenwich Observatory in England, the location agreed upon by a conference in 1884 is considered to be 0 degrees.
Unlike latitude, the distance between degrees of longitude varies greatly depending upon the location on the planet. The distance of the degree is widest at the equator with 69.172 miles (111.321 kilometers). At 45 degrees north or south, the distance between degree longitudes is about 49 miles (79 km). While the distance shrinks gradually to zero as the lines converge at the poles. The geographic location of any place is determined through the coordinates which is composed of degrees, minutes, and seconds (DMS)
