Trying To Be A Gondolier in Venice, Italy | Quirky Customs Italy

Venice, Italy counts amongst the world’s most romantic cities. A major part of that: The lagoon city’s famous gondoliers. They ferry people, goods, and even animals through the canals that make Venice so beloved; but also so easy to get lost in. An experienced gondolier has it pretty hard – so how will Euromaxx reporter Max Merrill fare at the job? Will he be able to navigate his boat elegantly, and will he be singing as he goes?

This video was shot during the summer of 2020.

“Think about not falling in.” That, in a nutshell, is great advice for life in general.

Venice is very unique! Looks difficult to be a gondolier.

As far as I know, the tricky part is the forcola - it is angled so that the gondola can be steered even through the most weirdly angled channels. :-) And you need to know much about the city because a gondoliere also is a kind of local guide.

The gondolier makes 300k euro per year - exclusive indeed. Use to be low-class workers in centuries past and how that has changed.
