The difference is that OPS folks are very good at solving problems on the spot. They fix a ton on different problems (mostly in front of the customer), which just make them way more versatile than DEVs. On the other hand, DEVs are very good in organizing stuff; for example: naming conventions. DEVs are very good in following rules, and understanding processes.

I don't agree this will be one big team eventually, but OPS has a lot to learn from DEV (and vice-versa). Two different groups of people with different skillsets. Maybe a DEV is closer to a specialty in the DevOps world, while OPS is closer to a TAM role. And a SRE, is maybe the person who navigates well in both worlds.
