The producers wanted to make Gossip Girl feel real. Jared and Kushner are there as themselves to be a connection from reality to the show's fiction. Their roles are very small and brief, they were used as a vehicle to set the story in that event, like recreating real life with Gossip Girl characters in it.
I don't like Ivanka and Jared, but there's really no escape from them that they're part the Midtown Manhattan scene. Jared owns 666 5th Avenue. Ivanka's father, President Donald Trump, owns 725 5th Avenue. Were there other choices? Yes. But we did not know back in 2010 that this episode wouldn't age well.

They really did a good job.. I used to see Jared walking with his family all the time on my way to work.. I remember seeing him and his mom leaving their business at the time his dad was going to prison for black male.. His brother was walking with them as well. I will never forget walking behind them.. He was a very nice person. His entire family came off at nice people..
