in 1972, i read the newspaper about this tragedy. I have read, "miracle in the Andes". Amazing what they went through. God bless Nando and his friends.

It took us 5 days to cover the distance Nando and Roberto covered in 10 days. Obviously we had enormous advantages being trained mountaineers and having experience and nourishment. We did have to carry a lot more weight than they did (proper gear, cameras, tent, stoves, etc.) but either way the reason we did this was to show the world what an amazing feat Nando and Roberto accomplished. All my respect and admiration go to them!

Nando has always been a hero of mine. I read the book at age 12 lol. Love, faith, and not accepting failure as an option. If it was his destiny to die, he would have done so on his feet and moving in the right direction. God love him

Anyone criticizing Ricardo is being unfair. In videos i've seen he has paid these survivors enormous homage for all they went through. And that story is incredible. A plane crash, losing friends and family, an avalance buried alive and being forced to eat your friends laying dead next to you. And THEN, the escape out of there. I think the mountains saved them though. The beauty and magnificence of them provided the last ounce of strength to go on when all hope was lost. God Bless them all.

Wow this is very interesting! Is there a video or a documentary I could watch to see the exact same route taken by Nando Parrado and Roberto Canessa?

Very interesting. This story has captivated me since I was 10 years old. It would be interesting if you could use the same video edit out the sound & transpose a track where the plane impacted & slid down the mountain.

Imagine no food, dehydration, starvation, no gear, no training, no tent, or sny wamth and not knowledge if it was actually possible

In the movie it seems like people were just waiting for Nando to wake up to follow his lead. Why was this? Is this how the real life story took place? If so why?

How long it took you to get to the point where they found the chilean countryman?

They should build a hotel and heliport in Valley of the Tears, it would indeed be a popular destination.

You're being a bit extreme. My point being you can't claim that you followed their route when you really didn't. Those boys did it with zero equipment and starved, and zero experience, so it doesn't make sense to me how they were able to do it if an experienced climber, in top shape, with help around, and with the best equipment couldn't do it. The video is misleading - or the report was misleading is my point.

Why bother going out there and not following the same route the boys took?Seems meaningless if you don't take the same route to explain the challenges they face, and not what you faced plus given you are probably a mountaineer you should have stripped down to the same attire the boys were wearing to make it more understandable how two non-experienced, starved, young boys were able to climb out of there. An experienced mountaineer who is healthy going up maybe a more strenuous route makes no sense

For those that are curious and asking, I actually followed the exact route Nando and Roberto did on the exact same days of the year (but 33 years later) when I led the National Geographic Expedition in December 2005. We photographed the route and you can see it on my Alpine Expeditions website or you can read about it on the April 2006 issue of National Geographic Adventure Magazine. Nando and Roberto met with me in Montevideo and were very helpful in helping us re-construct the exact route.
