This is a very good 40 years old musical movie. "Bye, Bye, Life" -musical number was so memorable in the end.
R.I.P. Bob Fosse and Roy Scheider.

3rd best movie I've ever seen. Still quite profound for all these years. When you burn the candle at both ends the wax goes twice as fast.

The only two times I could sit through a movie musical, but they’re both masterpieces: the original WEST SIDE STORY and this.

"It's Showtime, Folks!" <-- that scene has stuck with me for decades, I still say it from time to time.

#fromJAWStoJAZZ

Four years after the release of the horror-thriller blockbuster “Jaws” (1975), in which he played the leading role*, 47-year-old Roy Scheider starred in the musical drama film “All That Jazz” (1979). He was TERRIFIC, FABULOUS, STUNNINGLY SUPERB❕

The trouper later stated that keeping up with trained dancers was, by far, the hardest and most demanding thing he had ever done physically in his career.

As an actor, Roy Scheider was seldom flamboyant or glamorous, rather being a stalwart tasked with setting up more colorful characters. “All That Jazz” showed us a totally different side of him. The rough and understated Scheider was given a chance to be big, brash, and what’s more, to sing and dance‼️ The musical leaps out as a definite rarity in Scheider’s casting. He could have been stuck with the memory of past characters, hence lacking credibility and believability in “Jazz”, had he not been the utterly versatile and skilled performer he proved to be. KUDOS❕

One of the first lines, “To be on the wire is life; the rest is waiting”, is a voice-over as a man is falling from a high wire into a net (and the speaker - Scheider’s character - then admits he did not make it up). That quote refers to the title, giving it its fundamental raison d’être.

The oeuvre won the Palme d’Or at the 1980 Cannes Film Festival. And at the 52th Academy Awards, the motion picture was nominated for nine Oscars.

Lauded director STANLEY KUBRICK himself called “Jazz” the “best film I think I have ever seen.”

In 2001, “All That Jazz” was deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” by the United States Library of Congress, and was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry. Rather exceptional for a musical.

In 2007, Roy Scheider was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Sundance Film Festival at Brandeis University, following the screening of “Jazz”.

AN ABSOLUTE MUST-SEE CLASSIC‼️

Hats 🎩 off to you, Roy Richard Scheider (1932 - 2008) 🌹…

* Well, TECHNICALLY you might argue that SCHEIDER and the (nameless and uncredited!!!) GREAT WHITE SHARK co-starred in “Jaws”❕ But in the history of motion picture, has any shark ever been nominated for an Oscar❔… NOPE.

This film won the Oscar for Best Production Design at the 1980 Awards. Over ALIEN. 😐
One of the biggest WTF moments in the history of awards. 😑

Roy Scheider is an actor with many drawers.

I didn't know this existed. Is this a ripoff of Chorus Line? Reminds me of The Apple.
