What People Forget About Our Lady of Guadalupe

The apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary that came to be known as Our Lady of Guadalupe was a miracle. The Castilian roses that came from Tepeyac Hill in winter were a miracle. The divinely illustrated vision of Our Lady on St. Juan Diego's tilma was a miracle—as is the fact that the tilma composed of organic fibers has refused to degrade for 500 years and is still available to see to this day.

But none of those were the greatest miracle that Our Lady brought to the Americas that fateful century. Fr. Mike points out the incredible miracle that many people gloss over—but the one that makes an eternal difference.

I had a very complicated pregnancy with my twins, just over 3 years ago. We had gone through infertility and prayed the rosary often as we went through that time. We have a statue of Our Lady of Guadeloupe in our home from my husband's grandparents that we would look to while praying. My twins due date was December 12th, the feast day of Our Lady of Guadeloupe. My water broke at 18 weeks and we were told there was a 20% chance they would make it. I also had a partial placental abruption at 23 weeks. I was on bedrest for 12 weeks, hospitalized for 8 of those weeks, and went through some extremely difficult moments. I felt Mary so close to me throughout that time. There were roses my mom brought to my hospital room that lasted much longer than they should have - looking back, seems like a reminder of her presence. My miracle babies came at 30 weeks, 3 days, and did amazingly well. The doctors were amazed at how long I stayed pregnant and how well the twins were doing. They are my miracle babies, and I'm sure that Mary helped bring our needs to God to make that miracle possible. Now at 3 years old you'd never know what they went through. We are so blessed, and I'll always have a special appreciation for Our Lady of Guadeloupe. ❤

The fact that the tilma has lasted this long and was able to withstand a bomb tells you its from God. The metal crucifix that was nearby was bent under the heat of the fire but the tilma remained intact. I was blessed to see it this year and it's beautiful ❤️. Thank you God 🙏

The Virgin Mary appeared as a mestiza to unite the Spanish and indigenous. Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe. I have a soft spot for Mi Mama. You can see images of her everywhere if you live in an area with a heavy Mexican population. That's one place I want to visit before I die. I have to see the tilma in person. Madre de Dios pray for us.

LORD JESUS Having two sons with special needs is overwhelming at times because they require so much from me. As a single mother things are difficult. I keep faith in you Jesus even as I struggle to pay rent, and as I struggle to buy groceries. Every month is a battle. I want to give up. Yet my Faith is my strength.

I was there, right in front of Her, crying my heart out because I failed to see the signs that She put in front of me to get out of a toxic relationship. I felt so ashamed when I arrived to the shrine that I was shaking and unwilling to look up. There was a line for confession, mass started at 10:00, local time, and I was able to receive Holy Communion. I could not stop crying and She, Our Mother of Guadalupe, took my heart. The priest, during homily, said "take your problems and bring them to Her. It will be all right and everything will be solved."

Conversion takes place daily. Please, take a chance to look at Her and live that outstanding miracle.
God loves us all. It's hard. The priest who confessed me said "do not get stuck in sadness. Look after your daughter and work to move on."

God bless us all. She is real. God is real and His love is real.

What I found particularly fascinating is Gods' perfect timing. In Europe, Catholicism was a little hurt in the early 16th century with Luther and the Protestant Reformation. Many of our brothers and sisters were lead away from the Church. While Europe was struggling, Our Lady miraculously appeared in Mexico and brought a great number of people over to the one holy, Catholic and apostolic Church, many more than were lost in the reformation. Thanks to Mother Mary, the New World became Catholic, and the Church flourished worldwide!!

This feast day has been a hard one for me the last couple years. I lost a loved one suddenly and unexpectedly on December 12, 2022 💔 I’m going to be missing him badly tomorrow and trying to ask Our Lady of Guadeloupe for comfort and hope 💙

Thank you for the beautifully recounted story. It’s essential to emphasize that Juan Diego’s hesitation was not due to a lack of time or love for Our Lady but stemmed from a profound humility and a sense of unworthiness. He saw himself as a lowly peasant, unsure if he was worthy of such a divine task. When the bishop demanded proof of his heavenly encounters, his faith was tested further. As his uncle’s condition worsened, Juan Diego chose a different route, prioritizing his uncle’s need for the last rites, unaware that Our Lady had already healed him. She met him on the alternate path, reassuring him not to fear and urging him to gather Castilian roses as a sign for the bishop. In that miraculous moment, as the roses fell from his tilma, the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared, solidifying the truth of Juan Diego’s encounter and demonstrating her divine providence.

Your beard is so cool.
I might not be officially Catholic but I know that Mary is our spiritual mother because when praying to Mary she points to Jesus.
Thanks for explaining this, I hadn't heard the story before.

This is a tiny miracle compared to those given in this comment section, but it touches my heart none the less. My husband and I live in San Antonio, TX, where the feast of our Lady of Guadalupe is widely and joyfully celebrated. We have multiple images of the Blessed Mother in our home, at least three of them of La Virgen. I collect Mexican folk art, mostly Day of the Dead figures, and have a very colorfully painted clay figure of La Virgen on top of my main display case. She's just over a foot tall, standing on a half-globe, with four small candles around her. Several years ago, on her feast day, I came into the living room and found our large black-and-white cat on top of the display cabinet. I'd never seen him up there before. He had not disturbed a single item, but was lying with his head on the base of her statue. He looked so cozy and peaceful, and I honestly believe that Our Lady invited him up there. Silly? Maybe, but I believe it and enjoy the memory.

Thank you Fr. Mike. I had an abusive mother and that left a huge scar on my heart. Knowing that Mary is my mother has helped to erase that scar. It will take a little time for it to heal but I know that it will because Jesus gave me the gift of His mother.
