Not only is the tape not the same size, but the signal is recorded completely differently. Even if you were to magically have a 1/2" 8mm tape (which would basically be a beta tape) the VHS heads would have no idea how to read the magnetic data.

Thanks for this - I was so sure my I remembered seeing an 8mm VHS adapter from the 80s but I was obviously getting mixed up with the VHS-C adapter.

So to watch them! I have to re-purchase a second hand camcorder for the MO120 and my smaller tapes. Coz both those camcorders have stopped working. What now? I really want to watch them.. but lost on how today 😢

Hello,

But how we transfer our mini DV to DVD or flash?

Very informative Sir. Thank you. You saved me some time. Now I can stop looking for a DV adapter

There was an adapter to enable early U-Matic machines to play the smaller U-Matic S cassettes used in portable recorders but later machines could take the smaller cassettes directly. With care, it was possible to use the smaller cassettes in the early machines without the adapter.

There was an adapter to play mini DV tapes in Panasonic DVC Pro machines.

Also, particularly with MiniDV and Digital8, they both record DIGITAL, while VHS is an ANALOG FORMAT, so even the format as a whole (including the way it records) is INCOMPATIBLE!!!

Thanks!
I have 2 VHS-C tapes and one 8mm one.
One of the video said we should try to avoid rewinding and forwarding as much as we can, but they didn't explain why. So what happens if we do, because I'll have to first rewind before watching or converting to digital

what you can do with 8mm is to just plug your camcorder into a vhs video recorder as a source of signal, set the video recorder to record the signal and then play your 8mm on a camcorder. sure, its re-recording so you're gonna lose a little bit of quality in that process but it's better than nothing. my parents did that for a long time. should also work with minidv and basically any source as long as you can plug it in

Thank you! have been searching for an adapter for my 8mm cassette so I can convert my them into dvd. I bought an RCA camcorder back in 1995, I was wondering if a Sony camcorder hi8, will play my cassette?

Long ago I had a running argument with a saleswoman in a department store who was quite sure that her parents had a 8mm to VHS adapter. She would not believe me when I said that no such adapters existed.
