In this video I cover the most surprising new car sales trends of 2022. Some cars saw huge sales increases in 2022 for no apparent reason, while others had huge drop-offs, again for no apparent reason. Lots of head scratchers. Can you make sense of any of these?

Civic sales have tanked because they got too damn expensive. Its an economy car that costs like 30k. The NA motor is absolute crap too.

Really cool that Matt is trying the idea. I enjoy seeing numbers and trends, so I can’t wait to watch this one.

I work for a vendor of the plant that assembles the Malibu. The reason the Malibu was up so much last year is because they cut production to nearly 0 through the pandemic, and all of the orders for them stayed active. They were “back-building” orders from the last couple years. This is also the same plant that builds the XT4, so that explains their massive sales gain too.

I’m sure Chevy has realized there is a huge hole in the market for a small American commuter CAR, as the rumor is the production plant just got contracted to run the Malibu through 2028

Thanks for this video! Vehicle stats--including sales figures--are some of my key areas of interest. I, for one, was considering buying a new Honda Civic but decided against it due to the high markups above MSRP and the lack of availability of a specific trim level and options in my area.

My friend is one of those got a Malibu. I am not surprised to see sales on the Civic and corolla are "low". A friend of mine and my wife were both looking for a car to buy last year, the dealer markups on Honda and Toyota were insane. My wife wanted a Civic hatchback touring and the dealer wanted $8000 markup. We then went to Toyota and checked on the Camry hybrid, the dealer wanted $6000 markup + a 8 months of wait. In the end, my wife got a outback which had only $1500 markup and my friend got a Malibu. My friend originally wanted a Honda Accord Sport, but it would have costed him $13000 over the malibu. Dealer markups are really killing sales on new cars. They are not necessary losing money since they are making so much money from charging markups, but the car manufactures suffer. I think car manufactures need to do something to penalize the dealers that are charging markups on cars eventually.

The classic enthusiast opinion vs customer opinion is something that will always make me laugh. Customers don’t give a damn what enthusiasts think

I think the Civic is easy to understand. It is the same mistake Honda made a few years ago by listening to reviewers criticize the styling of the previous model. The styling now is so bland as to be invisible. The market, young people, does not want to be invisible and does not want their car to look like their parents' Accord and they bought Civics like crazy despite reviewers' repeated criticism of the styling as too "radical" for them to buy it. It makes a Corolla look stylish and daring. Honda can save it by doing an early facelift.

The civic one makes total sense my mom would’ve got one but they wanted 5 over for a sport so she ended up with a Corolla for sticker and then my gf needed a new car so she got a Corolla at sticker as well. Honda dealers are sharks man unfortunately 🤷🏻‍♂️

Love the new idea of video Matt! Speaking on the Honda sales, my cousin was actually going to pick up a base Civic (2022) & the dealership wanted a $5k markup. When I told them no they texted my cousin to NOT have me come back with him 😂

One thing I can say is Cadillac dealers were giving CT5s away w 4k plus discounts, and Honda dealers wanted 10k over sticker for civics 😭 absolutely crazy when you mash those 2 together, also the cars that had crazy jumps like the terrain, I’d attribute that to shortages and dealers playing games for the Korean and Japanese brands

Not surprised about Civic sales. I think the design of the new car's exterior was such a step backwards from the previous design, only retro lovers would like it. If I were buying a Civic, I'd be looking for a previous design hatchback or coupe.

It makes sense. Here’s from one point of view: Many Honda dealers are marking up their vehicles and many dealers for other brands aren’t. Why would someone pay 5, even 10k over on a civic, which at the end of the day is an econobox just because it comes in a “sPeCiAL cOLoR, ” when they could go next door and get a Malibu for msrp or under which will basically do everything the civic does?

The reason for Civic numbers is not demand, it's supply. Honda can't (or doesn't want to) build more, they could easily sell more.

The 2022/23 Civic is perceived as too expensive and therefore bad value.

Might seem weird, but while visiting Sweden I have actually seen quite a few Chevy Malibus....I see basically no other Chevy models (besides the Spark which is a Korean car) and I saw 1 Silverado (or GMC truck, it was far away so I couldn't tell) I see way more Mopar products though, like RAM trucks specifically. They are the most American vehicles I have seen here, even saw 2 TRXs in the past month. I haven't seen a single F-150...you would think they would have an aluminum truck in a place that is known for steel cars rusting...odd.

About a year ago a friend ended up buying a Hyundai instead of an Accord, they wanted $7K "market adjustment" so he walked out. I'm not surprise at all of Honda horrendous 2022.

Absolutely loved your reactions and views on the figures, really appreciate you doing this video and the shoutout was a great surprise 😊 I find the stats so interesting how some "standard or less decent" cars sell the most among the general buyers and journalist views on them may not correlate to sales. As you commonly say, the sales will dictate what type of cars will be built by manufacturers, so if we want interesting cars then we need to buy them! 😝 thank you again mate, love from Australia! 🇦🇺
