I really enjoyed listening to him completely smack down the John Deere apologist.

There is something seriously wrong when it is not possible to replace a product's battery. When did changing a battery count as a repair? Taken to the logical absurd conclusion, when the light bulb fails in your house, you should replace the whole house.

There's a big difference between making something hard to repair (miniaturizing, SMD/BGA components, glue vs screws, etc) and making it impossible by prohibiting you from getting the parts and documentation needed

He did a very good job presenting. I'm only 23 but I've been fixing stuff since I was a little kid. It's FUN. But having done many repair jobs over the years, I've been very disappointed by the trends I've seen in just a tiny fraction of time.

It's about time we take back what is rightfully ours.

Wow, I don't think I would have expected the founder of Ifixit to be such a good political speaker. He did great against all of the questions

All tech / science Youtubers should be covering this

Car dealer tried to browbeat me into buying an extended warranty “because the maintenance/repair diagnostic software was proprietary and only the dealer could fix my car”. Ridiculous. The pendulum has swung too far and we are getting squeezed far too much. Hoping common sense will prevail. Great discussion! Thanks for posting this video!

This is a step forward for techs like myself who have become increasingly disillusioned in the industry. All those years of study and dedication from the early childhood years (which triggered our initial passion and interest) to gaining quality electronics qualifications from some of the best education institutions such as RMIT School of Electrotechnology which is where I earned my certifications. This movement gives hope in reigniting our passion, reduces electronic waste, saves lives from the Chinese militant Apple empire, Coltan mines that use children to less pollution. Maybe that once proud diploma that took so much blood sweat and tears to gain is actually starting to regain its real worth. We can hang them again with pride rather than being nothing more than a constant reminder of what has been becoming increasingly obvious. We were also clearly forced in becoming part of their planned obsolescence.

Nice one DJ! My wife's been involved with this movement in Sydney through her work. Good to see it being discussed here!

Dave - "These 'fruity' companies are making it hard to repair their stuff when it fails"
Kyle - "This Apple iMac is going to be a very beautiful piece of trash when it fails"

If I don’t have the right to repair something I purchased, that supplier stole my money because they have not transferred its ownership to me.

I’ve been taking apart and (eventually) fixing things since i could hold a screw driver. When I’m old my lifelong skill of fixing things will be held hostage by the companies I give my money to today. :(

If you buy something, you own it and therefore should be able to do what you want with it, including repairs.
I’ve seen many items with labels saying that parts can’t be replaced yet the replacement parts are readily available.

This was great!
Kyle Wiens of iFixit and Sandy Munro of Munro Live have a similar campaign to what they're trying to achieve with great design engineering and the circular economy, and especially right to repair. If you bought it you should own it out right.
I'm so glad that big influencers are putting this front and center that they love products but would love even more the ability to have choice when it comes to repair like MKBHD with Apple products. Keep up the good work Dave getting this message out there!

My growing despair is where a physical product relies upon an app (or website etc..). A manufacturer can unilaterally stop support for the app or website and "brick" the product overnight. I've had this happen a couple of times (fortunately on inexpensive products) but still frustrating that you have paid money for a product that doesn't work anymore solely due to an external app not being available or updated etc...

Every industry needs good regulations and anti monopoly laws. Far too many unethical business practices are just too damn easy and profitable.
