Hank out here casually using hippos to explain the sheer crazy amount of meteorites that hit the earth. Super helpful and also hilarious

If you grab a strong magnet, and put a plastic bag over it, you can run it across your gutters and sometimes come across them. They are usually spherical.

I've been hit by a meteorite (I think), I was out in the middle of my yard at the time and the smallest little pebble bounced off my shoulder. There was absolutely nothing above me (my yard was a 30 acre field) and it definitely wasn't hail.

If I ever release a prog rock album, it will be called '900 hippos of space dust'

"Where the hell did these 900 hippos come from?!?"
"You're not gonna believe this..."

I remember going to "space camp" in grade school and we ran some neodymium magnets over soil to gather up nickel/iron micrometeorites for an up close look under a low power microscope. That was a cool camp.

I remember when I was a kid, I used to keep a magnet outside. With time, little black 'hairs" formed. They were black and felt like sharp needles. Now I know where these come from.

I am actually more surprised by the off-hand factoid that hippos weigh 5 tons than I am about the meteorites.

Theres also a ton of micrometeorites found at the bottom of the ocean in places like Challenger deep!

Fun Fact:

Antarctica hoards all the micrometeorites because it's the only thing they have besides penguins.

Its so awesome when you're driving here in the Appalachian region at like 2am and you're the only car for many miles and you notice flash of white lines quickly popping up and more slowly (but still quickly) fading away. Then more streaks. Then they start happening every second or so, sometimes in clusters. I always try to tell people about how cool of experience it was but its like telling someone about a crazy dream you had, they dont really care. Lol
