Similar laptop. I have a Dell 1545 from 2009 with a t-9600 and 4 gigs. Debian works fine for me.

Just spent a few days playing around with LMDE5 on Virtual Box... got it looking like my Ubuntu Budgie 23.04 DE without loading Budgie. Nice job by LM team. I plan to install LMDE5 on a HP USFF when it arrives next week.

Last time I installed Mint the one thing that stood out, the level of hardware support is bloody insane, not even kidding. This installed with everything working on an Intel D510 atom with nvidia ION chipset (platform long abandoned by nvidia). A system i keep around because it's hard to find a linux distro that will do this out of the box these days. If you want to run the propitiatory drivers, nouveau looks horrible on this chip-set and is slow, you need to run an older kernel. Mint just asked me do you want nouveau or the proprietary drivers, just had a note if you pick proprietary the kernel will be downgraded to 5. something. Ran through the install, reboot, everything working. I was floored. First time i didn't need to fiddle around to get everything working on that system.

That is the exact same laptop I just upgraded from this week. It's a 13 year old 17" HP G71. WIFI has started to fail though. Same specs you have. LMDE runs better than LM 21 on that system. Now.... I run LMDE on my main Desktop/Server. I currently run a nVidia GT1030 on this system. I just installed drivers from APT. There is a Nvidia Script you can run to determine what driver you need to install (sudo apt install nvidia-detect). For any other software I can't install from the repos, I use PACSTALL.

I've been running LMDE for about six months now and I'm very happy with it. Updating is easy and so far it seems like the better choice to set up as a server. All of the features of Linux Mint are there or they seem to be easy to find and install. I wonder if Mint will just switch over and make Debian their base system instead of Ubuntu.

When I started using Linux about 8 years ago I started with Linux Mint, I found it quite enjoyable, then I moved to Pop!_OS, used that for awhile while running steam games under GE-Proton, finally I now using Nobara Linux 36 (KDE Plasma) created by Glorious Eggroll. So far so good, I have not done much gaming in Nobara. I have cachyOS and CentOS7 in virtual machines looking at those distros too. Loving your Audio and Linux videos! Still saving for the U-Turn turntable 8)

Hey Joe - July 31st - Vanessa has become available as an Upgrade - I upgraded fully expecting failure but - everything went well and everything is running fine on the old Imacs - me is very pleased. I was expecting to have to reinstall Mint 20 but mate it's all good - delighted :-)

I did run this on the test bed system. Solid and stable, and very acceptable to a pair of elderly Mint Cinnamon users.

My laptop is a 2011 HP.
Ubuntu 20.04 iso booted fine from a bootable USB.
Ubuntu 22.04 iso no longer booted from a bootable USB.
Only the word GRUB in the uper left corner.
I wanted to go from LM 20.3 to 21
LM 21 (based on Ubuntu 22.04) failed to boot from the USB.
The same. Only the word GRUB in the uper left corner.
Luckily LMDE5 booted from USB. I like it a lot!

I struggled for months with the GD Nvidia driver for my GPU. Not saving settings, randomly landing on some bizarre resolution, you name it. Then suddenly it fixed itself!

Hey all, I am looking to get back into Linux (have used MX Linux XFCE and really liked it; VERY efficent ram use...)
My question though, is it possible to dress up Mint with the XFCE desktop possibly..?
My laptop is a Dell XPS13 from 2016. 8G ram; Trying to finally drop windows off in the ditch finally..?

Hi Joe - you recall my installation of Linux Mint on 2 unsupported Imacs? Running firefox would stall the system so bad that recovery was very difficult. I then ran Driver manager, selected update driver and all was good. Graphic card = Nvidia. I tried installing the latest Mint but couldn't solve this issue so reverted to: 5.4.0-139-generic - all remains well - cheers

I use to do LMDE 5 Elsie Cinnamon before. But for me, I like new software. LMDE 5 is using old packages. That is why I switch to SparkyLinux Semi-rolling on Debian based distro.
Of course I us KDE Plasma instead of Cinnamon Desktop Environment. Much easier to configure and more fun than Gnome.

depending on how old the nvidia card actually is nowadays the genereic noveau driver might fit your needs better then the respective version of the nvidia driver of this time, and probably better then the most recent nvidia driver
i just cannot remember to which card version this was the case
