My husband once got asked by a cashier to donate a dollar to the less fortunate, and he said "Lady I AM the less fortunate".

If everyone is paying it forward, than no one is actually paying it forward. lol

The girl at the fast food today asked me if I wanted to donate to children's education. I told her NO

Someone paid for my bill once in a Starbucks. It totally made my night. I drove off and enjoyed my free coffee with warm and fuzzies.

You by your lonesome: *Order $5 coffee*
Person after you: *Orders $30-$40 worth of food and drink*

This is why pay-it-forward is cancelled.

Panda Express _refused_ to return my change "for the sea otters" (until after 10 minutes they realized I was not going to go away without my $0.35). Have never returned to any of their locations in the 3 years since. Get woke, go broke.

I always say "no" to rounding up. I don't give to a charity I know nothing about. I don't know where that money's really going. Even if it's a bit of change. I feel very strongly about this for some reason 😆

The real question is, why in the world would you buy coffee from Starbucks?

I have a funny story on this subject. Hello, I’m a McDonald’s grunt. I’m the guy you see at The drive through window that takes your money and gives change. And I’ve seen this phenomenon happen several times throughout my years being a McDonald’s grunt, but just a month ago or so a lovely little old couple (regulars, at that) came through and ordered their daily McMuffin but they paid with a hundred dollar bill. They told me to take the change and pay for every car behind them until I ran out of change. Their change ended up paying for like 20 cars, and some people who came to the window to discover their free meal tried to pay for the guy behind them, but I got just keep telling them “no, here’s your free food, please leave” THAT. Was amazing.

I used to be homeless and lived in my car. I had five dollars and hadn't eaten in a few days. Went through the drive thru and the guy in front of me paid for my meal. I was super appreciative and parked my car to eat and the guy was pulled over after the drive thru I guess checking his order so I walked over to say thank you. I didn't feel bad about keeping my only five dollars so I could eat again later.

This literally just happened to my son and I 45 minutes ago at DD. It was completely unexpected and I was forced to make a split-second decision while 3 employees stared at me through the window. I said thank you and drove away. The point of this phenomena is not the circus act that it creates when everyone is paying for everyone's stuff. It begins and ends with the random act of kindness of the first person. In order for that act of kindness to be authenticated, the second person must appreciate the kindness, accept the generosity, and drive away.

I hate when the cashier is like “would you like to donate to the poor children today?” Like miss, there is a 99% chance my card is gonna decline... I AM THE POOR CHILDREN

What is worse is when a company Demands that their employees donate, and then you hear how WONDERFUL the company was for THEIR donation

So crazy I come across this video today. Yesterday the car in front of us paid for our coffee, I was taken back and pleasantly surprised! I said to the employee, wow tell that car if you ever see them drive thru that we said thank you! And I dont know if it was our imagination, or just the way his eyes looked over his mask, but my wife and I really felt like this guy was upset and giving us the WTF look/energy. We were like, damn what was that about?? My wife was familiar with this weirdness, and told me about it. I mean how does a good deed ever get fully completed if you are supposed to pay for the next car? It cancels out the kindness of the next person allowing you not to have to go in your pocket. Good people do good deeds bc their heart tells them to do it at that time, not bc some else tells them to do it. Sorry so long winded, I'm just tripping out that this is actually a thing..

About the only way I like to pay for the car behind me is if I see it’s a first responder.

I have a really charity driven dad. Every so often we’ll be at a restaurant and he’ll notice a table of people or a person who look like they’re down on their luck or just having a bad day. Because of that impression, my dad will secretly tell their waiter to bring him their bill and he buys their food.

There are a few reasons why this is actual love driven charity while “paying it forward” at a drive through isn’t. 1) no one told him to, 2) it wasn’t blind, he’d chosen the beneficiary based on impressions about their countenance.

And lastly, my dad would feel bad if the person then had to pay for someone else’s food. The whole point is to alleviate a financial burden for a stranger. Not to then make that stranger feel some sort of pressure to fork over their money, even if they don’t have much. Otherwise, it’s just social pressure like Matt says. I would rather pay for my own food and move along than contribute falsely.
