This video introduces the idea of a step function by going through several example problems from the Khan Academy exercise linked below.

A step function is essentially a piecewise function composed of horizontal lines on distinct intervals. Going from one interval to the next looks like going up or down different steps.

The general strategy for solving these problems is to identify the borderline x values between intervals and determine if the step includes the x value or not depending on if the circle is filled in or not.
