The Demographic Transition Model (DTM) illustrates how populations have changed over time. This model can be broken down into 5 stages and can be linked to the development of wealth, healthcare and education within a country.
Stage 1 sees high birth and death rates which equates to low population.
Stage 2 sees the increase in population due to a reduction in death rate.
Stage 3 sees the population continue to increase due to better healthcare despite a decrease in birth rate.
Stage 4 sees a plateau of population due to stability in the birth and death rates
With stage 5 predicts a decline in population due to a decrease in birth rates.

Population pyramids indicate the structure of a population. These can link to the 5 stages of the Demographic Transition Model.
