This is one of the most vicious dubbing changes made in ZEXAL. A lot of dub watchers aren't actually aware of how severe the changes actually are.

Not only do they completely drain all the emotional from this scene by deleting all the dialogue between Nasch and IV

They turn Nasch into your stereotypical Saturday morning big bad villain. They remove Shark's remorse and replace it with a joke. Shark (at least for a portion of when he's a Barian) truly got done dirty with the ZEXAL dub unfortunately :(

"I'll see you in Hell, Ryouga..." Is a tremendously romantic line, way more than it has any right to be.

They really made Shark say some stupid pun in the dub, when in the sub he was in literal anguish. He was willing to join everyone he killed in death to atone

DUB Writers: Who needs a deep emotional scene when you can just have a bad pun.

What I prefer about Shark's entire character is that he represents Zexal's idea of what revenge is perfectly. We had seen it with Tron and the arclight brothers, we had seen it with Shark himself, and now, we are seeing it with what has become of him. During season 1, V says when talking about his father's quest for revenge that once your goal is accomplished, nothing remains of a life that was completely dedicated to revenge. This is a theme that will continue to be relevant in the grand scheme of Zexal: Violence only leads to more violence, until eventually, there is nothing left.

Nash in his previous incarnation spent his entire life trying to take revenge on Vector for killing his people and sister, so much that when the war was finally over and the curtain rolled up on the battlefield, he was the only one left alive. There was nothing left for him to live for, and eventually, he took his own life, in his own guilt and sorrow.
Shark followed in his past life's footsteps. He vowed to take revenge against the one man responsible for his sister's injuries: IV, and dedicated his whole existence to this hatred. But when he finally defeated IV and learned that everything had been the work of one man, Tron, he realized he wasn't satisfied, and set on a quest to take his revenge on the latter in turn. Then, he learned of what truly had happened to Tron, and found a new target for his revenge plan: The Barians. His whole life had been dictated by revenge.
That was, until he learned that he wasn't only the king of these Barians, but also, the only man responsible for the Barian world to even exist in the first place. In truth, he had been the one man he was trying to take revenge on for centuries now. In an ironic twist of fate, he was the object of his own hatred.

When Nash became a Barian and learned of the errors of his way, he truly became a man greater than himself. He fully accepted his role as king of barians, but also as the one man responsible for the war going on. He let go of his personal feelings (including his friendship with Yuma, his personal desire for revenge, and eventually, he even let go of his own hatred for Vector and accepted him as another victim of fate and fellow Barian) and acted for what his people and friends in the Barian world truly desired... Protection, yes, but also, revenge on the Astral world for having tortured them for so long as a result of his own actions.

“When this war is over, soon, I too, will die”
This is what Nash tells IV on his death bed. Nash is aware that what is left of a person after their desire for bloodshed and vengeance is... Nothing. He is accepting his people's true wish because it is his responsibility, after what, he once again will take his own life like he once did, and die alongside the friends he was made to kill on the altar of the destructive desire that inhabits all men that is known as vengeance. I truly think Nash is the most tragic character in Zexal.

And it is exactly because he has given up on the hope of the situation ever getting better, and in finding another option to the conflict than more violence, that he ends up being defeated by the definition of hope in what the future holds: Yuma tsukumo, and his ability to trust in people for a better, peaceful world.

AND THEN YOU HAVE DUB NASH. He's a pretty mean guy.😊

There are times where a Yugioh dub has quirky jokes and one liners that occasionally stick with me, especially during duels. And then there are times they do shit like this, toning down if not completely butchering scenes. It's actually criminal.

Sub 4 was a man who tried to save his friend from walking into Hell and in the end ended up going there for him.

In my country, this was strictly a kid's show. It's even aired in a channel that is strictly for kids. The scene was never changed, the dialogue remains the same. Boy am I glad to live in a country where these themes aren't a taboo

Zexal's dub was another byproduct of 4Kidz trying to make it and Arc-V "elementary schooler friendly" even though actual Japanese elementary schoolers watched both Zexal and Arc-V.

And I guess having a story and deep character moments isn't "Elementary schooler friendly".

The dub is so baffling cs not only it doesn't give the scene anything, it straight up removes the whole dialogue and also makes Nash's final line be some kind of cocky line a bully would say while in the sub it's all ab the fact that he can't change his destiny and that he'll join everyone soon. He is not doing this for fun and the sub makes you know that

Why Ryoga Kamishiro's (Shark) character is complex and Reginald Kastle (Shark in the English dub) isn't:

When Ryoga regained his memories, he made a difficult decision. The Astral World and Barian World are heaven and hell respectively in the World of ZeXal (Japanese source material).

Because of Vector, the souls of Ryoga's people are trapped in the Barian World (hell). Ryoga COULD continue living his new happy life in Heartland city with Yuma and the others, but he would be abandoning his people to hell for all eternity.

Yuma and the others are on a search for the Numeron Code and Astral (or at least the people of the Astral world) was going to use it to destroy the Barian World because the Astral World (and Earth) are threatened by it.

That's why Ryoga decided to turn against Yuma and the others. He couldn't abandon his people to such a fate and it was critical that he finds the Numeron Code before they do. If he fails, the souls of his people that are trapped in the Barian World are finished.

Meanwhile, Reginald Kastle is evil because of reasons?

My friend asked me why I hate the dub of Yugioh Zexal so much.
I'm gonna show this to them the next chance I get.
These two clips honestly show great examples of why I love the Zexal sub so much and despise companies like 4kids so much.
I understand why they wanted to hold onto the Yugioh dubbing rights, but to continue to censor many of the incredible characters and stories told just so they can continue to cast a bigger net to earn more profits honestly sickens me.
I'm glad I was able to find out about anime subs at such a young age.
There is value to be had with the dub with the incredibly talented voices involved, but with how many changes were made to the source material, I can't help but have a bad taste in my mouth every time I compare and contrast these two interpretations.

Griffith’s speech in the original: *purpose, destiny, friendship*

what ruins most of these scenes in dubs is also the abhorrent use of music for every fucking scene.
