Does Gravitational Lensing Reveal Dark Matter’s Nature?

Modern science has identified that normal matter—protons, neutrons, electrons—comprises only 5% of the Universe's energy, with dark matter and dark energy making up the remaining 95%. While dark energy is linked to spacetime itself and dark matter behaves like slow-moving, massive particles, their exact nature remains unknown. Recent research suggests a type of ultra-light, wave-like dark matter may exist, challenging heavier, particle-like dark matter models.

This study used gravitational lensing, observing galaxy clusters like Abell 2744, to analyze dark matter distribution. Dark matter forms halos around galaxies and clusters, with structures revealed through weak and strong gravitational lensing. Strong lensing creates arcs and rings when background objects align with the cluster, while weak lensing distorts background galaxy shapes, both indicating dark matter substructures.

The research posits that wave-like dark matter might fit observed lensing better than traditional models, but conclusions are premature. The study relies on limited data, using only one strong lensing system, HS 0810+2554, and an oversimplified model, lacking interaction effects with normal matter. True validation requires analyzing thousands of lensing events with advanced models to account for complex cosmic interactions. Current results are suggestive but far from conclusive; further, rigorous evidence is needed to truly understand dark matter's nature.

If time is considered to be a dimension, then gravitational lensing may reveal more about the nature of dimensions, twisting, shape changing and morphing of matter due to gravity and time, e.g. the apparent shape changes of the accretion disks around black holes.
