This is true that the Advaitata was too difficult for the crude minds of hippies. They needed something more closer to monotheism, and Prabhupada gave it to them, but Prabhupad should not degrade the other equally important philosophies of Sanatan dharma.

Why is form so important? The "impersonalist" argument seems to only be claiming that physicality of "God" is not valuable in the ultimate advancement of the "soul". This only suggests the attitude that idols on their own are not tenable as a explanation of the universe and that on their own are not constructs for establishing ethical mores. I think the fundamental here is that while idols are amazing tools for understanding and developing a relationship with God/Godliness - ultimately the tool should not be confused with the action or consequent product.
