"Modal Harmony" can sound like an advanced topic. In reality, it's not. Or at least it's not complicated.

In a nutshell, it just means how you create chords (harmonies) from different modes ... "modal harmony." In this video, I explain how it all works. And with the aid of color, you can see how these patterns and principles work -- in all 12 keys. This information will take your songwriting to the next level. Check it out.

Songwriting is fun when you can actually see what you're doing. I use the familiar patterns of color to explain music theory so you can write songs.

Brilliant. I've seen some videos on this by other folks like Beato, but your illustrations, use of color and visual diagrams takes something that can be dry and frankly intimidating and makes it elegant and lucid. Please keep doing these and some of the other videos where you show the visual flow of the chord progressions - it's very easy to follow and understand using your approach.

Thanks, Mike! This is a very substantial tool for musicians at any level.
Please, if you have time, do some videos with Chord extensions, alterations, and reharmonization with color coding (rules or rubrics). You help us a lot, songwriters/composers here.

Very clear! What particular app, website, or tool are you using to generate the graphics? Or did you build them yourself?

Thank you for creating this clear and concise video on modal harmony.
Just an FYI, at 7:11, I think you played a C- chord, after the seventh mode of Locrian instead of C°.

Hey! Thanks for that video. I'm trying to get the main idea of the modal harmony. Does it mean that during some piece of a track i can use chords from multiple modes? Or it means that i should use chords from chosen mode only or both?

Hi. Do you have a complete chart from different keys of those modes that i can download with. Thanks!!!

I might be very wrong here, but isn’t this just all diatonic theory? Modal harmony is something else yeah !?!

Holy crap! You are not explaining Modal Harmony at all! Don't get me wrong, you are teaching what a "mode" (rotational aspect of any scale that creates another scale) just fine, but you are not aware of what a "MODE" is (harmonic environment). When people say Modal Harmony, they are talking about a system of harmonic rules to truly be in a MODE. Most peoples "attempts" at being in a MODE, result in just accidentally falling back into Tonal Harmony (KEYS). I have collected videos here which will elucidate the differences with explanations and examples:
Aeolian is not JUST MINOR!!

Ionian is NOT Major!

Major Scale vs. Ionian Mode

Beato - Ionian Harmony More than Major

Short - Minor vs. Aeolian

Aeolian 8-Bit

Ionian 8-Bit

Beato - Aeolian Harmony
