Technical detail:
The size of the mesh holes is smaller than microwave wavelength (~ cm). Thus, while these holes prevent microwaves to come out, they let normal light through, so that we can see the food being cooked.
This is better than using just a solid barrier.

The size of the hole in the mesh is very important. It's such that the mesh is small enough not to let through the waves and is large enough to let you see inside.

microwaves actually wouldn't really have enough energy to damage you if the door was broken, as long as you weren't standing with your face right up to it. Microwaves manage to heat up your food by creating standing waves, thus keeping the food's water vibrating, which would not be made if the door wasn't there, and so while it might make a few of your water molecules vibrate a bit faster, it probably wouldn't do much unless you were inside of it.
Also, the grating's sole purpose is to let you see inside, it'd be much better if there was no window but just a solid door, but people like watching their food cook
