Показать описание
Papua New Guinea gained independence on September 16, 1975, marking the end of over 60 years of Australian administration. Previously governed as a United Nations trust territory by Australia, the country emerged as a sovereign nation with Sir Michael Somare as its first Prime Minister. As a constitutional monarchy and member of the Commonwealth of Nations, Papua New Guinea retained King Charles III as its head of state.
The newly independent nation faced significant challenges from the outset. With a population of extraordinary linguistic and cultural diversity, including over 800 indigenous languages, Papua New Guinea struggled with issues of national unity, governance, and economic development. These challenges have persisted in various forms throughout the country's post-independence history, shaping its political landscape and development trajectory in the decades since 1975.
