Time has finally come to embarrass the 700 Euro helmet that has caused me so much anger and frustration over the past year.
I bought the helmet, together with my Dainese touring gear, at the beginning of 2019. It had just been launched and it was advertised as the lightest, safest, coolest modular helmet.
I first used it on the 10 day, 3500 km long Baltic Tour. On the 4th or 5th day, the top vent started rattling uncontrollably when closed. I could not ride with it open, either, as it was still too cold and, also, having it open would somehow double the amount of noise inside the helmet. It was so bad, I had to stop on the side of the road and tape it shut with two stickers. It took AGV the entire summer of 2019 to repair the vent under warranty.
The second trip I took it on, the Go South Patagonia Ride, ended up also being the last for this particular helmet. This time, two weeks into the journey, the vent failed again in the exact same way. However, that was not the last nail in its coffin, as a further week into the journey, the right side visor detent teeth completely broke off - that meant I could no longer keep my visor open at speeds over 30-40 km/h.
Predictably, I sent the helmet back to AGV again just as the pandemic was taking a turn for the worse in Italy. They ended up completely replacing my broken unit with a new one. I had, however, had enough of their bullshit build quality at that point. I negotiated with the online shop I had bought the helmet from to have it replaced with a completely different brand of helmet. The one ended up getting was around 100 Euros cheaper than the Sportmodular, but I did not fight motoin over the 100 Euros. I was just glad to get rid of the bucket and eager to see why everybody hails the new helmet I got as the holy grail of adventure lids.
See you in the next episode for the unboxing.
