Protests in Israel against the government’s planned judicial reforms are entering their sixth month this weekend. The unrest has broadened to include other issues such as inequalities between ultra-Orthodox and non-Orthodox parts of society. Ultra-Orthodox men who study at religious schools don’t have to serve in the military. Only around half work official jobs, and, though they contribute less taxes, are often entitled to more state support because of their low income. A recent budget that allocated the community billions more in government funding has secular Israelis calling for change.
