The 1980 Republican National Convention held its collective breath when news broke that President Gerald Ford was considering being Ronald Reagan's running mate. The drama intensified when Walter Cronkite interviewed Ford in the CBS News anchor booth, much to the chagrin of other media outlets. As longtime CBS News correspondent and former host of "Face The Nation" Bob Schieffer recalls, "it brought the whole convention to a halt."

I saw a man become President right before my eyes. It was during the 1976 campaign. Pres. Ford was appearing at the Detroit Economic Club. I arrived at the event late so I had to sit way in back. As it happened, from my seat I could look to my right and see the waiting room. In the waiting room was Pres. Ford. He was sitting on a folding chair. He was slouching and smoking a cigarette. He just looked like an average guy. Then, they announced his name. Ford put out his cigarette, got up, straightened his jacket and then stood ramrod straight. He was the President of the United States.

I've looked for the footage of this complete interview for years. I watched it live and was stunned at the notion of it. Have never seen it again since, sadly.

Ford actually wanted his name taken out of consideration. Reagan had approached him on the idea months earlier and Ford said no but promised to campaign for Reagan. Then it was actually Reagan who brought it up again at the convention in Detroit. Ford laid out unreasonable expectations about his possible role and got Reagan to agree to take his name out of consideration. Ford wanted Bush on the ticket and got what he wanted. In spite of a historically polite but cool relationship between the two men over the years, Ford faithfully campaigned for Reagan that Fall. Ford and Bush helped to get party moderates on board with Reagan.

Ford was jealous of Reagan. In fact, Ford was an elected guy
