When looking at effective radiation patterns (like for antenna gain) you should look at two angles. The high gain looks like a cone from the side, but all of them from above are circular, so its still every direction to the sides but less signal above and below the antenna, where as a directional antenna is a cone from both views and more-so beams signal in one direction (like long range point-to-point signals, not really broadcast signals).
