I Purchased a new 1964 Fender Mustang when I was 12 years old, Olympic White W/ Burgundy Pearl pick guard. Still have it today, it looks, plays and sounds as good as ever.

Love how these guitars were like $20-$100 when they first came out and you could find them in just about any pawn shop, now they go for anywhere between $1000-$2000 and are nearly impossible to come by. Thanks Kurt Cobain

I'm happy to hear you play your Mustang every day! My first electric was a '66 Mustang. I got it in 1975, and still play it to this day. It has a few mods. They have only recently increased in value. Most of the time I've had it people would barely trade you a set of strings for one. I'm glad they're popular again. I gave $175 for it and a new Gibson amp.

Nice to see people taking the time to set these up and get them playing right. Mustangs have gotten a bad (and undeserved ) rap for a long time. My old red '65 totally kicks butt and sound a lot like yours. They're fine instruments if you give them a little attention and T.L.C.

Thanks for the vid. I just bought a 1970 mustang and couldn't figure out how to get the lip stick tube and tremolo arm to cooperate. Now I'm pretty sure things are gonna be ok

People must just like painting these guitars black. I have a 1966 Mustang. When I took the pick guard off I found that it was originally Dakota Red. Somebody took the old finish off and painted it in black lacquer. As you probably know the early Mustangs only came in Red, White, or Blue. I took off the light gauge strings and put on a set of D'Addario 10 - 46. I adjusted the neck slightly too. It seems pretty good now and plays well.

I checked some boards and the consensus was 11's. Nice Dave!

I've got my Mustang set up so well I can do dive bombs and it will stay in tune, and I use 8's!

Man first of all great video. I just bought a Japanese fender mustang, , real nice guitar it sounds amazing, only problem that I'm having is that as soon as I touch the tremolo it goes out of tune, if seen a couple of videos of people fixing this problem you address it shortly too, but could you tell me exactly what it is that I have to do to get it tune stable . Peace !!

Great vid! my girlfriend just bought me one of these. 1966 from what i can gather...mine plays really nice...love the thin neck. since i'd never had one before, i wasn't sure of how the bridge adjustment was performed, or of the tremelo system which you have covered. so thanks for that. unfortunately, i noticed that the strange pickup system seems to be wired incorrectly.. both pickups work in their normal on position to the left. they both shut off completely in their middle setting, but they are also off in the position to the right of center which i believe should be the out of phase setting...i know you didn't touch on the pickup wiring in your video and i'm not sure if i want to jump in there with a soldering gun and figure it out. i was wondering if you or anyone reading this has any advice on what to do. i'm a bit intimidated because its a classic and she spent like $900 at a pawn shop...if it was a fairly recent model, i'd likely go for it... thanks again!

great stuff man, love your vids ! i came here because my wonderful lady bought me a vintage 66 Mustang and its gorgeous! only problem is, in her well meaning excitement and generosity, she forgot that i'm lefty... so my question for you Dave is; do these guitars make for an easy transition to restring and replace/alter the nut, or is it an intonation nightmare waiting to happen...? i'd love your opinion on what i should do...thanks again!

You're missing the stringing part which is where I need help figuring out, I've changed many guitar strings before on other guitars but the tuner pegs are different on the mustang I see the strings go around it then into the hole so how does it tighten up like that

That was my first port of call, I'll give it another try though and see if it just needs to settle.

Malibu Blue came about in the late 70's and into the early 80's with Fender's "international color" line. This was previously Sonic Blue.

Also, it may be that someone had tinkered with it and lowered the saddles for those strings, causing the fret buzz.
Put your finger on each string to slide up to find exactly where the fret buzz starts at and the fret it ends.
That'll help him answer you easily.

Do you know that the saddles and string height are set properly for all of the strings?
Google your string height for that model or a similar one. You'll get it fixed, don't fret about it. :)
