Cotton, born to a sickly mother, Cottonheart, vowed to become a medicine cat to heal his mother's condition. It was only after he was apprenticed that he discovered she could not be cured. He spent moons taking care of her, as his knowledge of herbs grew, but eventually his mother refused treatment, tired of a life of constant suffering. Cottonpaw, unable to see his mother suffer any longer, agreed to free her from her torment.

This decision ultimately led to him being stripped of his medicine apprenticeship, and being forced into warrior training by his father, Wolfstar.

"If you insist on using your claws to kill, then I will let you kill. You will become a warrior, and sharpen your claws on the pelts of your enemies. And you will never hurt any of your clanmates again."

My heart aches— He just wanted to help his mother and he had no other option but to put her out of her misery. And then he’s forced to repeat that again and again, but now he’s killing without reason. It is such an incredible plot, I love it so so much.
