Written when he was 17, "Waterfall" is like an old friend to Jon. It
got him the cutest girl in his high school, made him the life of many
parties, and has been a big hit with pianists and piano teachers
alike. Jon says that in high school it was proof that chicks dig even
ugly guys with skills.

This tune has significant meaning to Jon and all of us at ThePianoGuys because It played a pivotal role in convincing Jon to commit to a full-time career as a pianist. An earlier video of Waterfall was done as a pre-TPG experiment. This version is ThePianoGuys' official video release.

My neighbor used to play this. He was 13 years old. We lost him to brain cancer just 2 years after that.

Rest In Peace.

I can almost play this fast, with maybe like 70% accuracy, and I've been learning since May... Man I feel slow. I honestly don't know to whom it will matter, but this song has come to mean a ton to me. I participated as an actor in my highs school's drama club for my last two years, having finished Senior year in June, and our club instructor is a wonderful, wonderful man. In technicalities, he's an excellent teacher and made each and every one of us an actor ten times better than when we started out. And he is unfailingly kind and so much fun. He's done a lot for each of us in our personal lives, too, and has had a particularly profound affect on me. Sometime last year, he came across me practicing on the performance piano in the school's auditorium, which I did every morning, and told me that I had a lot of talent, that he was impressed. Maybe a month later, I was practicing on the piano between our two rehearsals for one day and he called me over. He showed me this song and said "I want you to learn this. Learn it and play it for me before you graduate and I retire next month." So I did. Didn't have it mastered, but I had memorized and learned well enough for the time. So I played it at our school's talent show and he came out of the audience with tears in his eyes. I have never been so determined to learn anything on the piano as much as this song, never been so proud of myself for making another proud of me, so this song has a lot of meaning for me. And it's really beautiful besides. I play it every single day I have access to a practice piano on campus In college, and hope I will never forget it. Thanks, Jon Schmidt.

Thank you for writing this song! My brother bought the music, and played it as my wedding recessional! It's just beautiful. :)

What continues to baffle me is that in the beginning it said "written at age 17." Jon is so incredibly talented!

I love when performers look sooo happy when they play. Jon Schmidt does just that - uses the God given talent that he has to give the world some really great music through a wonderful performance!

Lol! 😅 Loved the smirk on Jon's face right after he finished; it was like, "Yep, that's it and I'm done!" 👏👏👏

I really love how the piano guys don't need impossibly fast or complicated technique to impress people all around the world. All you need is a passion for music <3

Brings me back to the days in 2006 while on my mission (for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints). I was with a missionary companion at one point who is also incredibly musically talented. He sings opera (is a true basso), and plays the piano and drum set.

When we had down time, he would play the piano. This was one of the pieces he would regularly play, and it was a joy.

I listened to a lot of Jon Schmidt's solo albums back then, and Walk in the Woods was one of em (the album upon which this piece is included). I believe it was track 4 on the album. Or was it the last track? It's been so long!

Anyway, great video. Lots of pleasant nostalgia! Thanks for sharing.

Mike, you're still a beast, dude

That's my Beta brother! I have had the pleasure of him playing that song for us at the fraternity house more than once! He also plays upside down and crosses his hands. I was just telling my family about that song again because it's Christmas and it puts me in my Christmas spirit, so we all just watched it. I get goosebumps every time. Thanks, John!

I just heard this on Pandora, and came over to Youtube to watch it. I was so completely moved by this piece! The energy, the passion, just wow! I didn't even realize I had tears down my face, until the piece was over. THAT is true art. Thank you for brightening my day!

One of the most joyous songs I've ever heard. It's impossible to be sad listening to this. Finding out that it was written when he was 17 makes it even more wonderful.

This was played at my nephews wedding in 2021. It’s the first time I heard it. But now I will send to it all the time what a great melody

My favorite piece of piano music...ever. This can take me out of lousy mood and into a better one every time. And being a redhead, I love Jon's remaining hair ;-)
