I am feeding a abandoned cat near my home. He is a large orange Tabby who lives/hides under a storage (Matson) container.
His name is Big Guy, and I have been feeding him and his petite companion, a small abandoned female, I named Petunia, for
several years, at least 10. Two years ago, I rescued Petunia, because she was becoming arthritic, making her very vulnerable
to the parking lot traffic , near the container she shared with Big Guy. I prepared her for months, telling her she would have a
family and a name, a a safe place to retire. She died naturally at her new home, a few months ago, a gave her pain pills, but it
was clear she didn't want to leave us, and she uttered a last meow, before her breathing stopped. What a sweet cat, I miss her
so much. I am now preparing Big Guy for his retirement, as he is now becoming weak, looks at me everyday with a forlorn look.
I hope that compassion towards life is a characteristic of intelligent life, but perhaps intellect and empathy are independent.
