UPDATE#1: When I recorded and posted this video last year, I wasn't yet aware of the growing evidence *against* the moderating role of 5HTTLPR in depression. It appears that some major studies are now discrediting what was once thought to be a key piece of the explanatory puzzle for mood-related problems. For more information, check out this article by Border and colleagues...
...as well as this summary by Alexander:

UPDATE#2: In the beginning of the video, I refer to variables "A" and "C" as "independent" and "dependent" variables, respectively. Although many researchers hypothesizing mediator and moderator models frame the conclusions of their articles in language which vaguely resembles independence/dependence, this is technically incorrect unless an experiment has taken place. Correlational designs, including many models of mediation/moderation, are not mechanistic in the sense of showing evidence for cause-and-effect, as only a true experiment can offer that sort of conclusion. So, I wanted to offer a cautionary note about that. This doesn't render med/mod models less helpful in the social sciences, it's just important that we don't misinterpret them! For more information, this article by Tryon offers a great discussion:
