Understanding the Warships of the Chinese Navy

This is a guide to the surface warships of the Chinese PLA Navy, which has seen exponential growth over the past decade. We look at aircraft carriers, destroyers, frigates, corvettes, and amphibious warfare ships.
We examine surface units only, so no submarines or support vessels. We count all warships that are currently in service, or are expected to be commissioned in 2022, but no later.

Most accurate report on the Chinese navy I have come across so far, based on news from China. Most other channels tend to use info from outdated third party sources.

Nice .... The more impressive thing is the time it took to achieve all this

Great video with objective information, not the biased crap you commonly find in many other videos. 👍

These guys are crazy, having achieved so much in so little time! The epitome of sheer long-term vision, persistence and determination. Absolutely relentless in pumping out modern, capable warships, sometimes launching several all at once!

Yup, check it out...

From 2014-2022 (8 years time), 8 Type 055 14, 000 ton mega-destroyers have already been built (3 commissioned, 5 in sea trials), another batch of 8 under construction. The first Type 055 started construction in 2014 (No, that's not a typo. EIGHT YEARS ago) and now . ....Along with the 8 new massive multi-dimensional stealth capital warships being commissioned to the Chinese Navy also includes but not limited to China's 2nd aircraft carrier the 75, 000 ton Type-002 Shandong which was also launched/commissioned into active duty within the same time frame, along with 2 more 7, 500 ton Type 052C destroyers (predecessor of the Type 052D), twenty two (yes....22) 8, 500 ton Type 052D destroyers (already one of the most capable modern warships capable of hot/cold launches--unlike the other modern systems that can only do hot or cold), seventeen (17) 4000 tons Type-54A frigates, seventy one (71) 1, 500 ton Type 056 corvettes, three 45, 000 ton Type-075 LHD ("mini assault carriers"), 5 Type-071 25, 000 ton LPD (landing platform dock or amphibious platform dock), eight (8) 7000 ton Type 815A/G "intel gathering/long-range signal & reconnaissance surveillance/monitoring "ships", two 11, 000 ton Type-94A Jin-class SSBN (able to launch ballistic nuclear tipped missiles anywhere in the world), the Type 094-class sub has 12 silos on its back, with each JL-2 missile carrying up to 8 MIRVS (Multiple Independent Reentry Vehicles, independently hitting their specific targets) and three (3) 7000 ton Type 093 Shang-class SSN (nuclear power attacked sub) being commissioned into the Chinese Navy (PLAN) all in 8 years...and from recent satellite imagery of Chinese military shipping docks (just outside, not inside those humongous ship building factories), there doesn't seem to be any slow down.

But the real baddies under construction/being fitted out are the new 20, 000 ton Tang-class SSBN, with 24 silos on its back, with the new JL-3's being able to fire SLBM (submarine launched ballistic missiles), cruise missiles, anti-ship/air/satellite missiles) and each warhead carrying 10-12 MIRV, the 85, 000-100, 000 ton Type 003, China's first flattop carrier with EMALS. The 4th, or starting from the 5th, Chinese carriers would be the orcas of the oceans, 130, 000-150, 000 tons, AI assisted/operated, highly advanced and sophisticated and can carry 120+ aircrafts. These baddies are going to come online by 2030.

That's in 8 years.

Just wanted to point out for PLAN Destroyers that some of older ones are being modernized with VLS and advanced radar & the Soviet build ships are still capable in an offensive capacity armed with long range supersonic anti-ship weapons.

If you want to grow your channel faster, you need to say, China is bad, China is dangerous, or China is the best in the world etc. In another word, misleading, exaggerating, faking, like other youtubers did. But I like your channel, and subscribed.

Very nice and informative video without bias. Looking forward on Japan and Indian navy. Maybe another one called Europe navy too. I am very interested in their huge frigates. And great to see Russian navy is there in your channel. Well done!

The 051b class has already gone through a major update, the Shenzhen(167) destroyer now has 32 VLS.

10 years ago, their navy was mostly Luda destroyers and Jianghu frigates. Target practice for better navies. Now its a good enough navy to pose a serious challenge to anyone

The CCG coastguard has 1, 200 vessels and its MSA maritime safety agency has 850 vessels, and the CRS rescue and salvage force has 200 ocean going rescue ships.

Then there is the Maritime Militia which has many patrol vessels and the PAPF Armed Police and the PSB civil police also operate hundreds of patrol and support vessels.

All of these can support the 1, 000 plus PLA Navy vessels and the 300 PLA Army landing craft.

A very powerful combined force.

I think the Liaoning and Shandong in future will have one catapult installed (while keeping the ski ramp) once the EMALS technology is proven on the 003 carrier.

It is about people Always has been.

How long has China been doing this? As a former sailor for the US Navy, I have the utmost respect for two foreign Navys. 1) The British are a historical naval power. They have been projecting sea power for a very long time. I worked with them in operational exercises. Very professional and very good. Especially at anti-submarine warfare. 2) I once took a tour of a Japanese Navy vessel. I have never seen a cleaner ship. I have never seen a more disciplined crew. Those are indicators of pride. I wouldn't want to tangle with them. I walked off that boat extremely impressed.

As far as the US Navy goes, I served as a sonar technician at the height of the cold war. The US Navy is the most competent institution I have ever been a part of. The training is unbelievably good.

Sustained carrier night ops? Give me a break. No one has a clue on how difficult, complex, and dangerous that job is. The US Navy has been doing it for decades. Time tested choreography, like synchronized swimming. It is about the people. Always has been.

4:02 "China is doing both" the most intimidating sentence in the video omegalul. China is on the right track of developing aircraft carrier!

The PLAN should upgrade the older destroyer, frigats, replace the older VLS system, install new tower and radar. Add a ciws. Basically a mini Tyoe 055. Building smaller ships with VLS can enable China bring more missiles to the battle field.

Using the long ski jump on each carrier; full load J15 aircraft can be launched.
Two carriers in tandem can double the launch rate of a single carrier.
