I always do carry on so for shoes I wear a pair and pack a pair. Only taking one pair is risky. If your shoes get soaked or ruined somehow you are stuck with damp or damaged shoes or buying new shoes and getting new shoe blisters. I wear the bulkier walking shoes and pack the lighter walking flats that look good with pants or skirts. (I always pack at least one skirt because some places still actually frown on women in slacks.) My color of choice is black because it doesn't show scuffs as much.

I know people love them, but I have never thought Birkenstocks were comfortable. The footbed is way too hard and makes my back hurt. I love Allbirds for walking. So comfortable! I found some black waterproof ankle boots by Merrill that I will be taking on our trip to Scotland. I love how versatile they will be for looking dressier while being very comfortable for a lot of walking in the rain!

I agree: Birkenstock for the win ! They are very comfortable walking sandals.

If you’re going to do a lot of walking day after day, it’s good to have at least 2 pairs of shoes so you can alternate. It’s better for your feet. Thanks for the recommendations.

Great tips Allie! I have small feet so I put my ballet flats inside my husband’s shoes in his backpack 😂

Yes, shoe angst is real! I always appreciate your perspective…Nick takes minimalism to a level I can’t attain yet. 🤣

Prefer Mephisto footbed sandals/black/black flower. And short
Shaft UGG Ultra Boots/black suede waterproofed. Red Chanel ballet flats. Take only black, and white clothing. ✈️

In summer I Tevas and Merrill shoes for walking!
Sneakers can make me feel overheated so I often avoid them in summer
Sending love and light

I follow a similar approach for my picky feet. Start with activities we’ll be doing and weather. See if I can do all with two shoes, if not then add one more pair. Birkenstocks and a running shoe always make my list in warm weather.

My kids are getting bigger and we are able to do a bit more traveling so I greatly appreciate all of the tips

My shoe plans for an upcoming trip are Adidas Cloudfoam for most of the time-walking around in. Clarks Cloudsteppers are just the MOST comfortable sandals I've found. Are we seeing a trend? I like things that are cloud-like apparently. Haha. I may also bring my Toms Alpargatas. They are relatively light and shouldn't take up a ton of room for carry-on purposes. They aren't great for walking tons of miles, but they are super comfortable for running to dinner or what not.

I agree with your husband. As a european woman i only wear black nike runners when traveling. Or black solomon trek runners if involves hiking. Then i bring the €1 Penneys/primark flipflops for the shower/pool

Expound on the comfort advice, that is most important (to me anyway!) 🙂

FYI, Birkenstock makes a white leather sneaker that’s pretty awesome. I’d found kits if cute options but none that fit and stayed comfortable walking several miles in a day.

I brought one pair of shoes which I had to toss in Japan and bought a pair of all black Hoka due to all the walking and stairs. I was in so much pain with my sketchers. Summer I would buy a light color. You can also get shoe covers for rain.

I found a slip on shoe by Tom’s called the Resident. It’s not super flat, accommodates my mildish bunions and are comfortable and nice looking. I’ve never cared for Birkenstocks, no matter the style.

Shoes are always the biggest stress point for me. I leave in 10 days for a short 10 day trip visiting family and I’ve been stressing for weeks on what shoes to bring 😂. The struggle is so real.

I’ve never tried Birkenstock sandals and I really need to. I’ve always heard great things about them.
