So they "were" collecting tenants' data and only deleted it after being confronted and saying, "We never used it, " after continuously telling tenants they were "not" collecting their data; yeah, this sounds very sketchy.

Just because the current owners / managers aren't recording tenant activity, doesn't mean new owners / managers won't. Security should not rely on parties promising they WON'T do something. Always prefer technical solutions so that parties CAN'T. Properly deployed end-to-end encryption is an example; it doesn't rely on companies promising not to read your messages. They can't, even if they want to.

They probably knew already and tried to get away with being cheap

What happens if there is a POWER OUTAGE? Does that mean that a tenant CANNOT get into their apartment? OR does it mean that now EVERYONE can gain access to the apartments?
What happens if the system has a bug/glitch in it or goes wrong in an upgrade? Do tenants LOSE ACCESS to their apartments - AND ALSO - can tenants end up LOCKED INSIDE - EVEN DURING A FIRE?

So no emtry with a power outage..
There are many reasosns not to use these fobs. The only reason to use them is cost for the owners..

Don’t show the address of this place then show how a Flipper zero can open the locks… You just gave a video tutorial on how to rob this place.

The transition purpose was always to save cost of rekeying, including lethargic supers that cannot be bothered with monitoring a locksmith while the unit remains open for access.

With electronic locks they can lock you out (or in) with the push of a button...

Fobs are good for the front entrance or garage but never for the apartment unit… the safest digital keys are now celular with NFC technology

The Luddites had good reason not to jump on the technology band wagon with haste...
What do these locks do to apartment insurance rates?

Landlords want 24/7 access and tenants can change keys.

I had a faulty lock on an old apartment door and I was drugged and sexually assaulted. Bad locks can cause a lifetime of trauma and landlords don't care about anything but money.

What happened to classic Schlage deadbolts?

Its very ironic because the first thing people complain about when doing a review on a hotel is if the hotel has "old fashioned" key locks.
