The time after the past and present is known as the future. Because of the passage of time and the principles of physics, its arrival is considered unavoidable. Because of the seeming nature of reality and the unavoidability of the future, everything that currently exists and will exist can be classified as either permanent or transient. The future is the section of the predicted chronology that is expected to occur in the Occidental view, which adopts a linear idea of time. The future is regarded as absolute under special relativity.

Presentism is the view that only the present exists and that the future and past are unreal in time philosophy. When religions address topics like karma, life after death, and eschatology (the study of what will happen at the end of time and the end of the world), they contemplate the future. Prophets and diviners, for example, have claimed to be able to see into the future. The study, art, and practice of speculating on possible futures is known as futurology. Modern practitioners emphasize the value of multiple futures rather than a single monolithic future, as well as the limitations of prediction and probability vs the construction of viable and desirable futures. The view that the past, present, and future have already been decided is known as predeterminism.
