Opioids, Stigma and the Brain

Opioids, which include substances such as morphine, heroin, and fentanyl, are powerful pain-relieving compounds with addictive potential. Individuals who develop an addiction to these substances often face stigma, which is a barrier to receiving care and treatment. In this video, we describe how opioids act in the brain to produce euphoria and relieve both psychological and physical pain. The video also highlights how the language we use to describe individuals who use substances (including opioids) can have a powerful impact on reducing stigma.
