Hey! I’m a fashion design major with a minor in product development and merchandising. This is called vanity sizing. I’ll use size 8 as an example. The store models their clothing around their “ideal” consumer. So if their consumer has a smaller waist at a size 8 than another brand, they will fit vastly different. Another part of vanity sizing is that some stores will cut a size 8 a few inches larger so it fits more like a 10 or 12 because it will make their target customer feel better about themselves and make them feel smaller, thus making them wanna buy there again. The issue comes when every store is different and you’re an 8 in one store, a 2 in another, and a 12 in a third. This contributes a lot to body dysmorphia. So, please remember, the size on the clothing is not a reflection of your size, but a reflection of what a store wants their size “x” to be. Which is really messed up

I buy almost all my jeans at old navy simply because their sizing is more consistent than I’ve found at other places 🤷‍♀️

The sizing at Zara is killing me. In my city (Germany) they don’t have any size above 6.5. I felt SO bad last time I went shopping and was on the verge of tears.

More men need to see this. My boyfriend is a healthy thin and will just buy random clothes on the web without even caring, just selects "medium" on everything and it's because he's buying men's clothes.... yet he gets so confused when I say I refuse to buy any clothing on the internet cause I can't try it on first. Even brands where I know how their sizing firs me are different in store compared to online. And sometimes the brand sizes CHANGE over time.... one of my favorite pairs of jeans I got from HT and they lasted me years before my thic thighs wore an unsalvagable hole in them. When I tried to get new ones of the same brand none of them fit me even though my size never changed....

See, I hate when this happens when I’m shopping with my mom. She’s very focused on my clothing size so if we go to a store and the sizes that normally fit me are too small because that brand just runs small, she’ll still freak out that I’m being unhealthy and need to lose weight. On the other hand, brands that run larger make my mom think that I’m losing more weight than I am and that she can get those smaller sizes

spencer barbosa also did an experiment like this with all different sized jeans from different stores and it’s really interesting because some of the smallest sizes were to big in one store, whereas in another, the biggest or her normal size was too small or gaped on the waist. Basically, the size of ur pants should never be an indication of ur beauty or worth because it’s not accurate and also ur gorgeous no matter what💕

Omg I swear I almost started crying in the h&m store. -So basically, I’ve been wanting these jeans for a while and I measured my self online and everything (btw I’m in the teen section) so, I asked my mom if we could get pairs of jeans at the store. I tried on 6 pairs of different jeans in there biggest sizes, the waste didn’t change but the length of the jeans did… I swear I’m still so mad.

Lmao it was a nightmare shopping for pants because they would barely fit through my things and hips but then be loose in the waist. Now I mainly wear skirts and honestly it helped me rebuild my confidence a lot since I don't have to fight for my life every time I'm getting dressed anymore 💀

Honestly, I think Zara sizing is very accurate. They don't try to make people feel better by making a size 8 pair that's actually a size 10-12

Its because every store/brand has a different target audience, and they make the sizes around that "ideal" client, so it always varies
