Just a quickly made, but fairly accurate jig for rough grinding chisels on the disk sander.

Thanks Jim.
If it's already hardened, you'll need to be careful not to get it too hot while shaping it. Cooling it in water after you do some grinding will work.

John, Thank you for the video. A simple but great jig, I never had any luck with my grinder, I can't wait to try sharping my chisels this way. Thank You Again.

My disk is 80 grit. Since this is just for getting the bevel in shape for sharpening, I think that 80 does that well enough. The finer the grit, the slower the cut and overheating is more of a problem.

This video isn't an ad - it's just a simple jig I made and thought I'd show. The ad before it helps to pay for videos like this, otherwise I probably wouldn't bother.
Not sure what you are referring to - the disk sander or the stand it's on?

Because of the length of duct involved in my setup, any sparks will be extinguished long before they reach the vac.
For the back, I just roughly cleaned it up on my belt sander, and later I did some more precise flattening on an oil stone.

In case I want to do a different angle. Thanks for watching.

Like I said in the other comment, the duct in my setup is long, and the sparks would be out by the time they reached any dust. Still, not a great idea, but minimal risk for my setup.

Thank John I will probably do it early in the new year as I am still working on Xmas prezzies. I am not complaining though as its got to be better than fighting your way through shopping malls to buy over priced crap that no one wants.
Anyway all the best to you and yours

Oh, ok. There's going to be different ads for everyone, it depends on what you like.

If it is a good quality blade, it should already be hardened. Maybe check your sharpening angle and make sure it's not too low.

I was surprised to see you using the dust collection - were you not concerned by all the sparks?

It looks like it works well. Do you have a similar setup for rough flattening the backs?

If people are bothered by the ads on videos, you can usually block them by downloading an app for your browser (certainly, that's true of Firefox and Chrome anyway).

Hi John thanks for another great tip and another handy jig.
I wonder if I could pick your brains on a related topic.
I have come by a piece of 12 mm Silver Steel rod it is 250 mm long I am told it is a high carbon tool steel.
I would like to make it into a round skew and I don't know if I should harden or temper it after I have ground it.

Having watched a few videos of you making tools I thought you were the guy to ask.
Keep up the good work and have a good Xmas & New Year Jim
