Karna, despite being through so much in life, being abandoned by his birth mom, being denied his birthright, being rejected by Draupadi, cursed by his teacher to forget his knowledge at the most crucial moment, stuck by his values of loyalty and generosity, to a point if anyone approached him after his prayer to the sun, he would give them whatever they wanted. That was how generous he was.

Despite Kunti abandoning him, he respected her wish and spared her other sons except for Arjun from being killed. He gave Indra his armor and earrings he was born with, in exchange for a weapon. He was a very loyal friend to those that supported and helped him, and never backed down on his word of charity.

His sin, was being a friend to Duryodhana, staying silent and not speaking out in the humiliation of Draupadi during dice game, I think in the serial he called her a whore, and encouraged the molestation. As a friend, he could have influenced Duryodhan to end his feud with the Pandavas, he didn't. He participated in the killing of Abhimanyu, killing him in a adharmic way, and violating the rules they set. He could have gone back to Kunti, he didn't.

However in the end, it was the weight of his generosity and loyalty that saved him from dying. He died a brave death, being the only worthy match for Arjun. Had Kunti not abandoned him, his destiny would have been very different. His choices ultimately defined his fate. Karna was neither good nor bad, just flawed. Same with all the Pandavas.
