Never really seen the full episode, but I'm pretty sure the portal Ares opened was the same used in the Hercules episode Stranger in a Strange Land and the Armageddon two-parter. Old effects, I'm sure. 😁
Other than that, loved the introduction of Mavican meeting Xena.
