Sony RX10 review: a new camera for a new world order

At $1,299.99 it's designed to be the camera for everyone and everything - with a big sensor, a long zoom lens, and a feature list geared clearly toward the average person, it's made to work for every photographer in every situation. It's the clearest proof yet that the superzoom is the future of the point-and-shoot.

one thing you can do to overcome the slow zoom is to change it to 'zoom by steps' this zooms faster between the general prime zoom distances (ie. 35, 50, 100, 135 etc)

He glossed over the video quality, but it's important to remember what this camera really is: a camcorder replacement. That's even more true for the subsequent versions of this camera that shoot in 4K.

The only thing I did not like about RX10, is the zoom ring. I wish you could disable electronic zoom motor and turn it like DSLR lens. Smooth and right to the point you want.

I don't agree that it's excessively expensive for what it is.
Consider purchasing a HD Video camera such as the Panasonic I purchased a couple of years ago. That was over $1100 and doesn't have anywhere near the image quality and is also not small PLUS I have to carry around a small stills camera.
If you take into account it is BOTH a great stills AND video it isn't expensive .. and has a great quality lens (F2.8 throughout the range) to boot.

For a family going on holiday (who can carry all the camera gear whilst flying) it's a great choice.

Use this camera to film surf, it’s absolutely perfect for that because I sit up on a cliff and need a nice zoom and nice video quality.

I can't imagine an amateur spending $1300 on a camera. This is clearly a pro level camera.

Sony had their chance of making OSX computers, and they naturally blew it. I'm super stoked to see that they're coming around now, ditching their failed PC business and focusing on building a small number of "insanely great" products.

Why no go for a NEX5 then; same company, therefore same level of quality, and it's basically half the price.

Why would anyone upgrade from the RX100 to this? It wouldn't make sense. You buy the RX100 so you can fit a capable compact camera into your pants pocket.
