I was taught the first method, but after watching the video, I noticed that I personally came up with the other 3 on my own and use all 4 interchangeably.

I mostly use 4th method because its easy to do mental calculation by it and addition is easy to do.

I usually go left to right during mental calculations.

As a math kid, I’m giving everyone permission to exclusively use the second one. It is the best method and schools should teach it in middle school

I was taught the first method, but i figured out the other methods on my own and use them all the time, it depends on the factors like how big is the number, do i have paper etc.

I just added 2 to both to get 429-40 and then subtracted to get 389.

I only recall being explicitly taught the right to left method. I used all those methods regularly ad hoc though, and still do.

3rd method makes the most sense to me mentally

I was taught all 4 methods, and my mind automatically tuned itself to apply a certain method for a certain question...

I love love love this short. Teaching only one method is the bane of math education. I was taught the first method but naturally thought using the third method. I got sent to the principal's office because I argued that my way was just as valid as the "official" method I was being taught...I was 8 years old.

I still ended up being an engineer even if I did my arithmetic the "wrong" way.

Add two to the subtrahend, then subtract two from the difference. It's pretty much a a per case basis.

I was taught #1. But I’ve been using #4 for a few years as long as the numbers don’t get too big. It’s funny to think of subtracting by adding.

I was taught the first, but I like to flip between all three methods which I've thought of on my own

Half the people here just got a panic attack from remembering their parents yelling at them during math homework.
