The US Gas Boom Transforming Global Oil Markets

The New Shale Rush: From the icy wastelands of North Dakota, an energy revolution is transforming global politics.

In North Dakota, the extraction of shale has enabled a huge reduction in the price of gas. This energy revolution is already shaking the global economic stage. But what are its long term consequences?

Williston is a boom-town in every sense of the word. By night the city shines brighter than New York, as flare-stacks burn off excess gas. By day it's swamped with new arrivals, keen to join the new gold rush. "If I could get you driving a truck, you could probably make $100,000 dollars a year." Economic developer Tom Rolf is proud to live in the only recession-proof town in the US. But as space becomes scarce tensions are bubbling to the surface. One local is distraught: "We shouldn't have to suffer when the government is making trillions". And the worries aren't limited to local concerns. As the US begins freeing itself from dependency on Middle-Eastern oil Europe frets over where it will get its energy supplies in the future. European expert Rob de Wijk explains, "This is also about the safety of Europe in connection with what's happening in the Middle East. We're on our own now."

"Barely uses any coal anymore"? The US still generates about half (or more) of its energy from coal. What I think he means to say is "barely opens any new coal-fired power plants anymore."

Kiruna Sweden an Iron Ore town also has no unemployment and the main problem is housing.
It doesen't help that the entire town has to move because the mine is aproachin and each day the collapsed area above the mine get's closer.

"No energy store holds enough energy to extract, collect and utilise an amount of energy equal to the total energy it stores.
Energy, like time, flows from past to future".

At 10:50 he says that 'the U.S. barely uses any coal anymore.' In 2013 the U.S. consumed 925, 106, 000 short tons of coal. Perhaps he would like to shovel some of that coal into a furnace?

This is hands down the best, most comprehensive and balanced of any vid I have seen on the subject.  Do us all a favor and watch this instead of that pathetic joke called "Gas Land".

@12:00 Its very simple.  You make it seem as if America is FORCING Europe to buy this coal.  This isnt fairly land where every looks out for everyone.  Our coal is cheap, Europe buys it.  End of story.  If they are worried about their coal emission, then do something about it.  Its like a fat kid crying about getting fat and complaining about fast food while he scarfs down a cheeseburger.
