Animation produced by the Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC) showing earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 and greater that occurred on the island of Kyushu, Japan, from April 14-16, 2016. Locations and magnitudes are from the U.S. Geological Survey. The first earthquake at 9:26 p.m. (local time) on April 14th had a magnitude 6.2. It followed by by a sequence of strong aftershocks closer to the city of Kumamoto, including a much larger magnitude 7.0 earthquake at 1:25 a.m. on April 16th. The last aftershock plotted in this animation was at 3:16 a.m. on April 16th. Colors and sizes of the symbols indicate earthquake magnitude.
