Bebop Scale, 6th Diminished Scale or Chord on Chord...that is the question! There's a particular sound known to the Bebop masters that's extremely useful when playing over a static minor chord that was used all the time by jazz players such as Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Sonny Stitt, Michael Brecker and so many more. Many jazz educators have taught this concept but have done so in different ways. Legendary jazz teachers David Baker, Barry Harris and Charlie Banacos come to mind and in this lesson, I'm going to show you how to understand this concept and explain how these different jazz educators used different methodologies to teach it.

Learning how to create tension and release when improvising is difficult...unless you know the necessary steps to get there easily! Learn some concepts from 3 legendary jazz educators in this lesson and start your next jam with a bang :-)

I have really been enjoying internalizing this lesson Joe. Really a great concept to use over Softly. The bebop line over static harmony is beautiful.

Working on this stuff right now with Bruce Arnold. Wrote a solo over a blues superimposing major chords, now I’m writing a solo over Invitation and superimposing chords on those long minor sections.

Great stuff Joe - I've used the old paper/pencil routine & transcribed these lines, loads of useful information to extrapolate from them, cheers as always!
